SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of "speed of thought," exploring the neurological basis for how quickly the brain processes information. Participants agree that the brain's processing speed is influenced by chemical interactions, with a minimum response time of a few hundredths of a second for sensory perceptions. The conversation also references science fiction, specifically works by EE Doc Smith, to illustrate the abstract nature of the topic. Overall, the discussion highlights the intersection of neuroscience and speculative fiction.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic neuroscience principles
  • Familiarity with sensory perception mechanisms
  • Knowledge of chemical interactions in the brain
  • Awareness of science fiction literature, particularly EE Doc Smith's works
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the neuroscience of sensory perception and reaction times
  • Explore the chemical processes involved in brain function
  • Read EE Doc Smith's science fiction to understand its thematic relevance
  • Investigate the philosophical implications of thought speed in cognitive science
USEFUL FOR

Neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists, science fiction enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the relationship between brain function and perception.

is there such thing as speed of thought? if so how can it be explained?

I guess - your brain processes thoughts at a rate determined by the chemical interactions in it. Ie, it takes at least a few hundredths of a second to register a new sensory perception.

But that doesn't have much to do with physics...

The particular usage reminds me of some old science fiction by EE Doc Smith. Which didn't have much if anything to do with physics, either.

I'll think about it. Anyone want to time me?
