Is This a Simple Box or an Optical Illusion?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on an optical illusion created from a box design that appears impossible to close without intersecting itself. The illusion is described as having a hexagonal body with cross braces at 45 degrees, which confuses viewers about its structure. Users shared their experiences of puzzlement when viewing the illusion, emphasizing its complexity. SolidWorks is mentioned as a tool that can complicate the interpretation of such isometric views.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of optical illusions and their visual effects.
  • Familiarity with isometric views in design software.
  • Basic knowledge of SolidWorks for 3D modeling.
  • Concept of dimensional perspectives, specifically Dimetric and Trimetric views.
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore advanced techniques in SolidWorks for creating complex isometric designs.
  • Research the principles of optical illusions and their psychological effects on perception.
  • Learn about Dimetric and Trimetric projections in 3D modeling.
  • Investigate other examples of impossible objects and their construction methods.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for graphic designers, 3D modelers, and anyone interested in the psychology of visual perception and optical illusions.

The back portion is a box. But depending on how you look at it, it becomes one of those boxes that is impossible to close without crossing itself. Its an optical illusion, that I made out of pure luck! I showed it to someone and they were puzzled for a good 10 mins. I stood there saying its a box, what's not to get? See, its right there. The guy was like, I don't see a box, how is this a box?

If you look at it just right, it looks like it has two cross braces supporting the front side at 45degrees.

The main body is a hexagon with one cross brace missing. LOL

it's a weird isometric view, but i don't see what's impossible about it.

Is it supposed to be this sort of thing?

Nor do I. The box part is a cube, with three faces "open"

Now edward's wheels image is something I could stare at for hours. If only I had the time! But alas, I must go waste time on some other threads for a while.

I see you are using Solidworks. That iso view can make things harder to make out. I use the Dimetric or Trimetric view when I run into that.
