Kepler's Third Law: Mass of Sun and Newton's Law

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Kepler's Third Law can be utilized to determine the mass of the Sun by comparing the ratios of different orbital periods and semi-major axes of celestial bodies. However, this method does not operate independently of Newton's Law of Gravitation, as it relies on the gravitational interactions described by Newton. The discussion emphasizes that while Kepler's Third Law provides a framework, it is incomplete without the principles of Newtonian mechanics to fully explain the underlying gravitational forces.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Kepler's Third Law of Planetary Motion
  • Familiarity with Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation
  • Basic knowledge of orbital mechanics
  • Concept of semi-major axes in elliptical orbits
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the mathematical formulation of Kepler's Third Law
  • Explore Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation in detail
  • Investigate the relationship between orbital periods and semi-major axes
  • Examine case studies of celestial bodies to apply these laws in practice
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy students, astrophysicists, and educators interested in the interplay between classical mechanics and celestial dynamics.

I read somewhere that the mass of the sun can be determined using Keplers third law. How is this possible without indulging Newton's law(gravitation) in ?

It can be determined using kepler's third law, but not with kepler's third law alone. Only the ratios of different periods and semi-major axes can be compared with kepler's third law.

That's what i felt.. thanks for the reply :approve:
