Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for a cost-benefit analysis video related to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), focusing on its financial implications compared to educational and technological benefits. Participants explore the broader impacts of the LHC, including future applications and the value of research outputs.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant recalls a video that compares the costs of the LHC to its educational value, PhDs produced, and technological advancements.
  • Another participant argues that the return on investment from the LHC will be significantly outweighed by the benefits derived from MRI technology alone, even if the LHC operates for another century.
  • A different participant expresses interest in how the video might account for potential future applications that are not currently visible.
  • One participant questions the validity of quantifying the value of education, PhDs, and spin-off technologies, suggesting that such assessments are arbitrary and uncertain, citing historical examples like the initial perception of lasers.
  • This participant also questions the purpose of the television program discussing these topics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the value and implications of the LHC, with some emphasizing its educational and technological benefits while others challenge the methods of quantifying those benefits. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the overall assessment of the LHC's value.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight uncertainties regarding the future applications of research and the arbitrary nature of valuing educational and technological outputs. There are unresolved questions about the methodologies used in the cost-benefit analysis.

If you've seen it, you'll know the one I'm referring to. It basically adds up the costs of labour and construction of the LHC, and compares it to the value in terms of education, PhDs produced, spin-off technologies, and multiplier effects.

I can't find it anywhere on youtube or TED but I'm sure it should be on one of them.

Thanks for any help.

Don't know about a video but as far as I'm concerned if they run it for another 100 years
the return on investment will still be outweighed by a few orders of magnitude
by MRI technology alone.

It would be interesting to see how the video takes possible future applications into account which cannot be seen today.

I don't understand how anyone can work out:
"the value in terms of education, PhDs produced, spin-off technologies, and multiplier effects."
Surely any such system is arbitary?

How do you know what spin off technologies it would produce, or the eventual value of research? When the guy invented lasers they told him they were useless.

What is the actual point of such a television programme?
