Looking for LHC cost-benefit analysis video online

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around a video that analyzes the costs of constructing the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) against its educational and technological benefits, including the production of PhDs and spin-off technologies. There is skepticism about the ability to quantify the value of these benefits, as many argue that predicting future applications and technologies is inherently uncertain. The conversation highlights the significant return on investment from technologies like MRI, suggesting that the benefits of the LHC may far exceed its costs over time. Questions are raised about the validity of measuring such impacts and the overall purpose of the program discussing these metrics.

If you've seen it, you'll know the one I'm referring to. It basically adds up the costs of labour and construction of the LHC, and compares it to the value in terms of education, PhDs produced, spin-off technologies, and multiplier effects.

I can't find it anywhere on youtube or TED but I'm sure it should be on one of them.

Thanks for any help.

Don't know about a video but as far as I'm concerned if they run it for another 100 years
the return on investment will still be outweighed by a few orders of magnitude
by MRI technology alone.

It would be interesting to see how the video takes possible future applications into account which cannot be seen today.

I don't understand how anyone can work out:
"the value in terms of education, PhDs produced, spin-off technologies, and multiplier effects."
Surely any such system is arbitary?

How do you know what spin off technologies it would produce, or the eventual value of research? When the guy invented lasers they told him they were useless.

What is the actual point of such a television programme?
