SUMMARY

This discussion centers on the high costs associated with purchasing Mu Metal, a nickel-based alloy known for its magnetic shielding properties. Users reported quotes for Mu Metal, including a 12x12 inch piece at $50 and a 4x12 inch piece at $27, highlighting concerns over pricing. Recommendations were made for Magnetic Shield Corporation as a potential supplier, with a cautionary note on the importance of ensuring the material has not been mechanically stressed, as this can degrade its magnetic properties.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Mu Metal and its composition (75-80% nickel)
  • Knowledge of magnetic shielding applications
  • Familiarity with material pricing and sourcing
  • Awareness of the effects of mechanical stress on magnetic materials
NEXT STEPS
  • Research suppliers for Mu Metal, focusing on Magnetic Shield Corporation
  • Investigate the annealing process for Mu Metal to maintain its properties
  • Explore alternative materials for magnetic shielding
  • Compare pricing and specifications of Mu Metal on platforms like eBay
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, physicists, and hobbyists involved in projects requiring magnetic shielding, as well as procurement specialists looking for cost-effective sources of Mu Metal.

It's so expensive!
I've received a few quotes.
1st quote was 12 inches wide by 12 inches long by .01 thick. 50$ I need 3 feet of that size. But wow that's expensive for a material that's 75-80% nickel.

2nd quote was 4 inches wide by 12 inches long by .01 thick. 27$ I would need 9 feet at that width.

I mean this is really over priced! On eBay they have some mu metal that's cheaper but it has a sticky adhesive on one side that I really don't want.

Does anyone know or have any experience purchasing mu metal? If so could you give me some info on where to get it for a reasonable price?

Thanks

I've been satisfied with Magnetic Shield Corporation:

I doubt that they are cheap, but I think their prices are competitive. Also, be careful where you buy your mu-metal shields. If they've been stressed mechanically, they lose much of their high-mu character. They need to be annealed at high temperature after any mechanical forming or manipulation.

Thanks for the info.
I will check them out.
