SUMMARY

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred offshore Cape Mendocino, California, on December 5, 2024, at 18:44:19 UTC, with a depth of 0.6 km. The quake triggered a tsunami warning for coastal Northern California, which was later canceled. The seismic event took place at the junction of the Gorda plate, Juan de Fuca plate, and Pacific plate, exhibiting a strike-slip fault mechanism. Following the main quake, there have been approximately 120 aftershocks ranging from magnitudes 2.5 to 4.2.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of tectonic plates, specifically the Gorda and Juan de Fuca plates.
  • Knowledge of earthquake magnitude scales and seismic activity.
  • Familiarity with tsunami warning systems and their implications.
  • Experience with seismology tools for analyzing seismic events.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the tectonic interactions between the Gorda and Juan de Fuca plates.
  • Study the mechanisms of strike-slip faults in seismic events.
  • Learn about tsunami warning systems and their operational protocols.
  • Explore seismogram analysis techniques to interpret earthquake data.
USEFUL FOR

Seismologists, emergency management professionals, coastal residents in earthquake-prone areas, and anyone interested in understanding seismic activity and its consequences.

Yeah, I got a very loud alarm notification on my cellphone for that. Word spread pretty quickly on social media, and I think most folks in Santa Cruz (to the west of Silicon Valley) were notified to stay away from the water. The alert just got cancelled a few minutes ago.

Yup, completely the wrong type of fault mechanism -- strike-slip instead of subduction

here's my seismogram of the event

So far, 120 small quakes (aftershocks of Mag 2.5 to 4.2) off-shore following the Mag 7 earthquake. There are three small earthquakes in California.
