SUMMARY

The mean score of a class of 30 students is 78, with 19 male students averaging 68. To find the mean score of the 11 female students, the equation .78 = (19/30)*.68 + (11/30)*x was established. Solving for x reveals that the mean score for the female students is 92. This calculation confirms the importance of weighted averages in determining group scores.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of weighted averages
  • Basic algebra skills
  • Familiarity with mean calculations

Suppose that the mean score of a class of 30 students was 78. The 19 male students in the class had a mean score of 68. What was the mean score for the 11 female students?

advice? thanks.

19/30 students got 68%. 11/30 students got ___%. What percentage does that blank have to be so that the average of the two percentages are 78%. keep in mind one percentage is weighed heavier because 19/30 is larger than 11/30

i got it. i set it up as:

.78 = (19/30)*.68 + (11/30)*x

then solved for x. is this how you would have done it?

yup.
