Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the recent attempts and future plans for launching methalox rockets, specifically focusing on the Zhuque-2, Terran 1, Vulcan, and Starship. Participants explore the implications of using methalox as a propellant, the status of various launches, and the technical challenges faced by these rocket systems.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that Zhuque-2 failed to reach orbit on its first attempt, while others mention upcoming launches from Relativity Space, ULA, and SpaceX.
  • There is discussion about the advantages of methalox as a propellant, including better specific impulse and the lack of coking in engines, making it suitable for reusable systems.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about the ignition issues faced by Relativity Space during their launch attempts.
  • Concerns are raised about the potential delays for Vulcan due to a test article explosion, with some suggesting it may not launch until July.
  • Participants discuss the implications of the failed second stage ignition for Terran 1 and the decision by Relativity Space to focus on the larger Terran R project.
  • There are conflicting reports about the readiness and timeline for Starship's next launch attempt, with estimates varying widely.
  • Some participants speculate on the potential for Zhuque-2 to succeed in its next launch attempt based on its previous performance.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of views on the status and future of methalox rocket launches, with no clear consensus on timelines or the likelihood of success for the various rockets discussed. Multiple competing views remain regarding the readiness and potential of each rocket system.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight limitations in available information regarding launch dates and technical issues, as well as the dependency on external factors such as regulatory approvals and weather conditions.

ZhuQue-2 launched today.
This article describes the launch and the future plans of its maker, LandSpace.
Those plans include the mass production of a version of the ZhuQue-2 and eventually a stainless steel rocket that will be reusable.

Arstechnica reports on the details of the failures for the 2nd Starship attempt:

It also reported an estimate launch window for the FAA's contribution to flight 3:
The administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration, Kelvin Coleman, said last week that early to mid-March is a reasonable timeline for the regulatory process to conclude.

Elon has already indicated that the FAA license is on the critical path.
