Models of accretion disc emissions contradicted by experiment

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the validity of theoretical models of accretion disc emissions in light of experimental findings. Participants express skepticism regarding the reliability of these models, particularly in the context of black holes and string theory, while also addressing issues related to the thread title.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a need for skepticism regarding theoretical models that lack validation from laboratory or observational data, particularly concerning black hole models.
  • Another participant notes their unfamiliarity with the physics of accretion discs but suggests that the title of the thread should accurately reflect the content, indicating a contradiction by experiment.
  • There are discussions about the appropriateness of the thread title, with participants acknowledging the possibility of changing it through reporting.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the validity of the theoretical models discussed, and skepticism remains prevalent. The discussion about the thread title also reflects differing views on its appropriateness.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention the lack of familiarity with the physics involved, which may limit the depth of the discussion. There is also an acknowledgment of the challenges in validating theoretical models through experimental means.

I would be very interested to see comments from knowledgeable people about this.

My impression is that this is one more example of a need to remain at least somewhat skeptical about theoretical models that have not yet been validated by laboratory or observational data. Regarding the black hole models, apparently laboratory efforts have been in the works for some time.

With respect to those theoretical models for which a plausible method has not yet been suggested for how such data might possibly be gathered, perhaps a deeper skepticism might be warranted. I might very well be mistaken about this, but I have come to believe that there are several variations of string theory that are in this category.

I'm not familiar with the physics of accretion discs, so have no comment on the substance of this finding. However, a correct title would be "Models of accretion disc emissions contradicted by experiment".

Hi Paul:

I should have thought about adjusting the title more carefully. I gather it is too late to change it now.

Regards,
Buzz

You can always ask that the title be changed. Just report your own post, and in the reason for the report say what you want it changed to.
