Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding an Excel function to calculate a weekly increase or decrease in a running total. Participants explore how to implement a system that allows for both additions and subtractions to maintain an ongoing total.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for an Excel function to manage weekly increases or decreases in a total amount.
  • Another participant expresses uncertainty about the original request, suggesting it may involve a running total.
  • A third participant proposes that a simple equation could be used to add the previous total to a new amount, indicating a straightforward approach.
  • A later reply confirms the idea of using functions similar to bank transactions, where amounts can be added or subtracted to maintain a running total.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on the specific Excel function needed, and there is some uncertainty about the initial request and its requirements.

Contextual Notes

There are missing assumptions regarding the exact nature of the calculations desired, and the discussion does not clarify the specific Excel functions that may be applicable.

Which do I find the excel function for additional amount up every week?

For example: $100 + $50 = $150 last week then add new $50 this week total is $200 to keep the amount up every week. It should work either + /- amount

Thank you.

I'm not completely sure what you are trying to do.

Me neither. It sort of sounds like you want a running total, but that's just a matter of adding an equation in the next colum that adds the number above (previous total) to the number to the left (the next new number to add). It's a pretty simple thing.

Excel Function

That is correct, the similar like the bank amount sub(-) to spend or sum(+) to deposit...amount keep running total up and down everyday all year. I thought the function can work.
