SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of "cognizant engineering" and its relevance to the engineering processes at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The JPL has undergone significant process reengineering, focusing on the flight project life cycle and the governance framework that has shaped its Flight Project Practices. The conversation also highlights the need for a detailed understanding of process knowledge within work groups, referencing a paper that outlines these developments.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of JPL Engineering Processes
  • Familiarity with Flight Project Practices
  • Knowledge of process reengineering principles
  • Awareness of governance approaches in engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of cognizant engineering
  • Explore the JPL Engineering Processes in detail
  • Study the governance frameworks used in aerospace projects
  • Review the referenced paper on JPL process development
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, project managers, and researchers interested in aerospace engineering processes and governance, particularly those involved with NASA projects or similar engineering environments.

Developing the JPL Engineering Processes

This paper briefly recounts the recent history of process reengineering at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with a focus on the engineering processes. The JPL process structure is described and the process development activities of the past several years outlined. The main focus of the paper is on the current process structure, the emphasis on the flight project life cycle, the governance approach that led to Flight Project Practices, and the remaining effort to capture process knowledge at the detail level of the work group.

This is related to a current project.

I'm also looking for a good definition for 'cognizant engineering'. I remember some years ago an article, I think in IEEE Spectrum, that discussed the philosophy and principles and practices of engineering. I need to find it again.
