Main Question or Discussion Point

I returned home yesterday from North Carolina and wanted to give an update via some pics.

Doc Al said:
That is outstanding! All the best to her. (I like that a thesis is required for advancement; a friend of mine requires that of all his advanced black belts.) Be sure to let us know how it goes.
In the motel the evening before her test.

I was also. Even after following her nearly 14 years now.

Good indeed! That has taken dedication.
Her dedication comes in part from the reward of preserving the "traditional taekwon-do" style of Choi Hong Hi.

Congratulate her from me!! Well done!
I'll be sending her a link to this thread when she's home. She was to leave from Norfolk, VA this afternoon but there was a mechanical problem with her plane, so tomorrow.

Awesome! I bow to her! Much respect. :approve:
And I know she feels much respect for you. As do I.

Totally Awesome! Congratulations to her on her achievement :)
Will do.

I bet that was a fun trip! What does her foot tattoo say?
Outstanding trip. I'll have to ask exactly what the foot tattoo say. Some quote I believe. She also has this on the side of her neck. It means “Pil Sung” translates as “I am confident of certain victory.”

You know I have just a white belt in English, so congratulations threads are a problem for me - I don't want to repeat what others wrote, but I can't kick high enough to wrote something on my own. I feel like Doc Al wrote exactly what I think (even if we are looking from completely different POVs). Respect!

Please congratulate her for me! That's an awesome achievement.

My two sons and I have also been involved in TKD under Master Rubino and Grandmaster Duk Sun having reached 1st Dan for me and 2nd and 3rd for them and we know the incredible time and effort that must be put in to get to that level. My younger son still goes to class and teaches classes for kids at the local YMCA.

Can you tell us about her 4th Dan test? Has she competed in any tournaments?

Did you also take TKD?

I ask because during our TKD summer camp one year, a daughter took out her Dad with a kick and a leg sweep in a sparring session. He was both a proud Dad and an embarrassed black belt at the same time.

I found a TKD reference for the Pil Sung characters:

Cool, did not know Pil Seung originated from Taekwondo. I mostly hear it used as a greeting by soldiers in the Korean army

And my fatherly pride has evolved into Much Respect now that she's an adult. What I respect most is her dedication to preserving the "traditional taekwon-do" style of General Choi Hong Hi. She's done this by teaching children for about 7 years now. The title of her required thesis is "A Guide For Teaching Taekwon-do to Children"

Can you tell us about her 4th Dan test?
I can tell you there was, as I replied to Borek, a thesis, along with a written test, patterns, one-steps, take-downs, joint locks, sparring, board breaking, she had to be at least 20 years old, know the Korean meaning/history of the patterns, speak and understand all the Korean terminology; for all belt levels up through 4th degree. For me to explain would be like asking a 1st grader to derive Maxwell's Equations.

Has she competed in any tournaments?
More than I can count in both ITF and WTF styles as well as ATA competitions.

Did you also take TKD?

I ask because during our TKD summer camp one year, a daughter took out her Dad with a kick and a leg sweep in a sparring session. He was both a proud Dad and an embarrassed black belt at the same time.
No. But she took me out when she was an orange belt not realizing the effectiveness of a well place front kick to the solar plexus.

Cool, did not know Pil Seung originated from Taekwondo. I mostly hear it used as a greeting by soldiers in the Korean army
Well that's because the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) was founded by a General in the Korean Army; General Choi Hong Hi. As a mater of fact, my daughters Master was a personal friend of the General and I have proof. I took this picture of a picture when her Master was younger and acting as General Choi's body guard due to death threats.

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/393x295q90/r/801/img0198gh.jpg [Broken]

That's her Master to the left of Choi Hong Hi as they were exiting a plane. There were other pics of the them in their suits with shoes in an office doing controlled jump front kicks where the shoes were about a millimeter short of contacting the chin.

When my son was preparing for his black belt test he needed to break board with two different techniques and he decided one should be a roundhouse kick. On his first try he missed slightly and gashed his foot requiring a trip to ER and several painful stitches and a six month delay before trying again.

The worst injury my daughter got story .....

With an ATA 2nd degree Black Belt and sparring another Black Belt who was double her weight, she got stuck with a front leg front kick just above the belt while going in for an attack. Stopped her dead in her tracks, lifted her off the mat, and landed square on her tail bone. She jumped right back up and finished that final match of the night. Then when getting her gear off to leave for home, she actually complained. She was in server pain and we summarized that the tail bone was broken and went to the ER. Turned out, it was slightly cracked but badly bruised (she still has the donut here). Took a while but didn't slow down her drive. The worst part of it was some ER a-hole's report got the insurance company wanting to get the school to pay, which I put a stop to.

Awesome news Don! You must be very proud! I spent a year in high school working my way up to red belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. I had lots of fun! Today I can barely lift my leg past my waist lol.

The Red meaning "Danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away".

Great pictures dlg. I look forward to seeing the ER pictures of the first person who is dumb enough to mess with her.
