Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the naming of two benzene compounds, specifically 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene and 1-chloro-3-nitrobenzene, with a focus on IUPAC naming conventions and potential alternative names.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks if the first compound can be named 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene and the second as 1-chloro-3-nitrobenzene.
  • Another participant expresses uncertainty about the correctness of these IUPAC names but suggests that they are unambiguous, proposing alternative names: o-chloronitrobenzene for the first compound and p-chloronitrobenzene for the second.
  • A later reply corrects the second alternative name to m-chloronitrobenzene instead of p-chloronitrobenzene, indicating a potential misunderstanding of the naming system.
  • One participant acknowledges the correction and admits to confusion regarding their previous statement.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the correct IUPAC names, with multiple competing views on the naming conventions presented.

Contextual Notes

There is uncertainty regarding the application of IUPAC rules and the validity of alternative naming conventions, as well as potential confusion about the naming system itself.

Can someone reply??

I am not sure these will be correct IUPAC names, but they will be definitely unambiguous.

I would call the first one o-chloronitrobenzene and the latter p-chloronitrobeznene. I believe these are still acceptable according to IUPAC rules.

m-Chloronitrobenzene not p-chloronitrobenzene, for the second, if you're going to use that naming system.

Ops, you are right. No idea what I was thinking.
