Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the value of studying nanotechnology, specifically in the context of pursuing a degree at La Trobe University and the potential for further education in engineering. It explores perceptions of what constitutes a "good degree" and the relevance of nanotechnology in various industries.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in studying nanotechnology and questions the degree's value and its compatibility with a master's in engineering.
  • Another participant challenges the notion of a "good degree," asking for clarification on what criteria are being considered, such as job prospects or financial return.
  • A participant suggests that a good degree should have modern, industry-oriented content, implying that relevance to current job markets is important.
  • It is noted that nanotechnology is a growing field with interest from various industries, including IT and medical devices, indicating its broad applicability.
  • Concerns are raised about the term "nanotechnology" being overly broad and potentially lacking specificity, which may affect the perceived value of the degree depending on the focus of study.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what makes a degree "good," and there are differing views on the implications of the broad definition of nanotechnology.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the ambiguity surrounding the term "good degree" and the varying interpretations of what constitutes nanotechnology, which may influence the discussion on its value.

What do you mean by "good degree"? What make a degree "good" to you? Jobs? Money?

A good industry oriented modern content is what i mean by a good degree

Nanotechnology is certainly an area which many modern industries are very keen on developing.
It's a large field ranging from IT to medical devices, and with many areas open for further exploration.

The term "nanotechnology" has become so diluted that it now covers everything from biochemistry to metallurgy.
Hence, the answer will very much depend on what you actually study.
