Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on NASA's announcement regarding a planned manned flight in 2008 to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. Participants express their thoughts on the implications of this decision, including its perceived risks and the value of the telescope's contributions to astronomy.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express support for NASA's decision, highlighting the beauty and significance of the images produced by the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • One participant suggests that the change in NASA's plans should not be viewed as a flip-flop but rather as a re-evaluation of their choices, implying that previous concerns may have been overly cautious.
  • Another participant uses a derogatory term to describe the previous decision-making process, indicating a belief that it was unnecessarily restrictive.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally express support for the decision to proceed with the mission, but there is disagreement on how to characterize NASA's previous stance and the rationale behind the change.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects varying interpretations of NASA's decision-making process and the associated risks, but does not resolve the underlying disagreements regarding the characterization of the prior decision.

NASA Plans Manned Flight to Fix Telescope

GREENBELT, Md., Oct. 31 — NASA announced Tuesday that it would send space shuttle astronauts in 2008 to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope, extending the life of one of its most valuable spacecraft on a mission once thought too risky to try.

Only two-years for a complete flip-flop.

Thumbs up to NASA

Sweet:smile: The images from that telescope are simply beautiful. Really makes you wonder what's out there.

I wouldn't call it a flip-flop. I would say they re-analyzed their choices and realized they were being retarded
