Need information about pursuing Ph.D in USA

AI Thread Summary
To pursue a Ph.D. in Physics in the USA, in addition to the GRE General and TOEFL tests, the Physics GRE Subject test may be required, especially for international students or those from less familiar institutions. The necessity of the Physics GRE varies by school, with many programs expecting scores. The Physics GRE score ranges from 200 to 990, and preparation should ideally include a review of M.Sc. coursework and additional study resources. The validity of the Physics GRE score is typically five years. For more detailed information and practice materials, candidates are encouraged to visit the official GRE website.

Well I'm a first year PhD student, and the GRE is the only test I had to take (I'm a native English speaker, so no TOEFL). You can check out the GRE for yourself by going to the ETS website. Just Google "GRE ETS" and find the page for the physics GRE. They have a practice physics GRE that you can download as a PDF.

That is rather strange. How are you able to know about the GRE General test but not heard of the GRE Subject test?

Please go the GRE website. All the info you need to know about the subject test are there.

Is it really necessary? Depends on the school. Most schools will want such scores especially from international students and especially if they're not familiar with the institution that granted your degree.

Zz.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
