I would like to know what happens when a nitrate is added to sulfuric acid. ex. KNO3 plus H2SO4 what does that yield.
The nitration reaction between potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) yields potassium hydrogen sulfate (HKSO4) and nitric acid (HNO3) at lower temperatures. However, at elevated temperatures, the reaction shifts to produce potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and an increased yield of nitric acid (2HNO3). This demonstrates the temperature dependence of the reaction, highlighting the importance of thermal conditions in chemical yield outcomes.
