Not getting email notifications

AI Thread Summary
Email notifications for watched threads were not being received due to a hard bounce caused by an earlier email issue with the ISP. After confirming the email address was correct and checking spam folders, it was determined that the account had been suppressed due to multiple bounces and possibly marking emails as spam. The SMTP provider had stopped sending emails to the affected address, but the suppression was cleared, allowing notifications to resume. Users are advised to ensure their email settings are correct and to add the domain to their safe sender list to prevent future issues. The resolution led to successful receipt of notification emails once again.

About 10 days ago my email got screwed up due to a change by my ISP. I got it fixed several days ago but I STILL am not getting notifications by email of watched threads even though I AM getting notifications on the site. According to my settings (email is correct by blacked out to avoid personal detail in open forum) I should be getting them. What am I missing?

Is this about PF? I am now supposed to ask this question every single time. (That's a joke! Honest!)

Let's decouple things. Are you getting ANY emails on this account? Is anything ending up in Spam?

What was the email screw-up? Did your address change? How long did it last? My gut reaction is that due to the number of likely bounces, our SMTP provider may have stopped sending emails to your address. I can have a look later today.

Oh, yeah, the email works fine. I think Greg may have found the problem.

It was totally out for about a week, so sounds like you've identified the issue. Thanks.

Yep confirmed, you were being suppressed due to a hard bounce. I have cleared it.

@Greg Bernhardt could check my email as well?
You are also suppressed due to at some point labeling our emails as spam.

What do I have to do then?

I'm not a big "spam labeler". If I did, it was by accident or, most likely, my email provider did it for me. As I said previously:

Just to make sure, I rechecked my email account: Not only there is nothing in any folders or groups, but I also have no addresses related to PF in my block list AND I have 2 PF addresses in my safe list, namely (obfuscated):
  • admin[]physicsforums[]com
  • pfmail[]physicsforums[]com
Nothing in my safe mailing list, though.

I've added physicsforums.com as the whole domain to my safe sender's list, we'll see if it makes a difference (I have doubts).

For the email notifications, I might have an explanation unrelated to PF per se. I recently learned that the big free email providers have very aggressive spam policies. When they feel someone is sending spam, they don't just put the emails in the spam folder, they refuse to deliver them, sending back an Email Error 550: High Probability of Spam instead.
That last link is not available anymore, but here is a similar link: https://blog.mystrika.com/email-error-550-spam/

Email Blocked From Recipient

The most obvious and immediate impact is that your intended recipient will not receive that specific email. For most 550 errors, the message is rejected and bounced back to you rather than deposited in the recipient’s spam folder. So whatever important information you wanted to convey is lost into the digital ether.
