SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the notation of matrices, specifically the query posed by Niles regarding the use of a compact format (1,0 ; 2 -5)^T instead of the traditional matrix representation. The consensus among participants is that this notation is not standard and may lead to confusion. Proper matrix notation is crucial for clarity in mathematical communication, especially in formal reports.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of matrix notation and representation
  • Familiarity with linear algebra concepts
  • Knowledge of mathematical typesetting tools like LaTeX
  • Awareness of standard practices in academic writing
NEXT STEPS
  • Research standard matrix notation in linear algebra
  • Explore LaTeX documentation for matrix formatting
  • Learn about best practices for mathematical notation in reports
  • Investigate the implications of non-standard notation in academic writing
USEFUL FOR

Students, educators, and researchers in mathematics or related fields who are looking to improve their understanding of matrix notation and its importance in formal documentation.

Hi

I have a question regarding notation of matrices. I am trying to conserve space in my report, so instead of writing my matrix fully like this
[tex] \left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c}<br /> 1 & 2 \\<br /> 0 & { - 5} \\<br /> \end{array} } \right)[/tex]
my plan is to write it as [itex](1,0 ; 2 -5)^T[/itex]. Is this notation correct? I must admit that I have not seen it being used before, and there might be a good reason for that.

Thanks for the help in advance.Niles.

No, it isn't. Why would it be so important to save space?
