OCD and SSRI's, (Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc...)

In summary, the conversation discusses the effects of taking SSRI or SNRI drugs on individuals with OCD and whether they have any permanent effects on brain structure. The thread is temporarily closed for moderation and it is suggested that individuals do their own research on the topic.

Hoping this is a proper section for this discussion. If you have/had OCD and have taken a SSRI or SNRI i'd love to get your input. Others are obviously more then welcome to chime in as well.

My question is, do SSRI's have any permanent effects on brain structure? Obviously they help regulate the re-uptake of Serotonin/ or Norepinephrine(for SNRIs) and therefore increase the amount of that neurotransmitter in the synapse. Do taking these drugs have any permanent effects on the changes in brain composition they create?

I'd also would like to hear about any changes in productivity/learning capability you experienced with these drugs.

Thread will remain closed. We do not give medical advice here, and we do not discuss anecdotal medical experiences.

Please see the following link, which should help you continue your research on these questions (thank you to Mentor Evo for providing the link):

1. What are SSRI's and how do they work for OCD?

SSRI stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These medications are commonly used to treat OCD, as well as other mental health disorders. They work by increasing the level of serotonin in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating mood and anxiety. By increasing serotonin levels, SSRI's can help improve symptoms of OCD such as obsessions and compulsions.

2. What are some examples of SSRI's commonly used for OCD?

Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac are all examples of SSRI's that are commonly used to treat OCD. These medications have been approved by the FDA specifically for the treatment of OCD and have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms.

3. How long does it take for SSRI's to start working for OCD?

SSRI's typically take 4-6 weeks to reach their full effect. However, some individuals may start to notice a decrease in symptoms within the first few weeks of starting the medication. It is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if you do not see immediate results.

4. Are there any side effects of SSRI's for OCD?

Like any medication, SSRI's may have potential side effects. Common side effects may include nausea, headache, decreased sex drive, and difficulty sleeping. It is important to discuss any concerns about potential side effects with your doctor and to report any troubling side effects if they occur.

5. Can SSRI's cure OCD?

SSRI's are not a cure for OCD, but they can be an effective treatment in managing symptoms. It is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed and to also seek therapy or other forms of treatment to address underlying causes and behaviors associated with OCD.
