April Showers Bring May Flowers

This week's contest is - Flowers. Your picture must have, as it's main subject - flowers. They can be real or artificial or an artistic representation.

Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a gray area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 650 x 490 or 490 x 650 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. But other than that, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest. Once a picture is posted, it cannot be changed other than a total withdrawl by that member from that week's photo contest. Exceptions will be made for modification to comply with the rules, such as resizing.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. These pictures must be something that you took, not something taken off someone else's photo albums or taken by someone else. I have no way of checking if you did this, so we'll go by the honor system.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread.

Yes, a painting, sculpture, mosaic, etc... as long as a flower or flowers is the main subject.

We already have a winner.

Plucked this from my water garden today just for this contest.
Such a simple and elegant composition, and a beautiful flower.

I have lots of flower pictures, and it is hard to choose, but here is a neat one.

I'll put up some other photos in the gardening thread. This flower is interesting in the way it develops over 24 hrs.

I also want to see if I can catch an Oenothera (Evening Primrose) which just started to open in our garden. They other day, I drove in from work and notice two blooms just starting to open. I had to got out later that evening and the blooms had fully opened. It would have been cool to get them on a sequence of time lapse images.

I think we need a separate "professional" category for entrants like Larkspur.

Astronuc, beautiful flowers.

Thanks, Evo. This particular flowers reminds me of those bursting fireworks. I was taking pictures of one as it formed.

Not a pro, just an avid enthusiast. I will withdraw if you wish. Anyone can take that photo. Just need a tripod, a couple of desk lights with white pillow cases over them and some black material for the background. Focus and use the self timer so there is no motion when snapped.

Here's my favorite May flower - and if we have a good year, these will be Macs in the fall. Due to the cold wet spring last year, the blossoms did not get properly pollinated. This year we have bumblebees, solitary mason bees, and even some honey bees, who usually show up after the apple blossoms have shed their petals. I don't have a macro lens yet, so I took this with my 100-400mm zoom while looking for birds to shoot.

 Alex caps, at first I thought those flowers were HUGE, then realized they were just a lot closer to the camera than the fence. Neat perspective!

Some of the strangest flowers I'd ever seen... I had to take a picture! Not sure if they were flowers or not, but I'm pretty sure they were pollen-bearing structures.

It's[/URL] a bottle brush plant! I love them, but they don't grow this far north.

Well, since I'm traveling, I don't have access to my pictures. So had to make a quick snap of the first thing that I see that fits the theme.

Nice. What are the trumpet-shaped blossoms in the background?

They are a variety of Fuchsia.

I am thinking we need a flower picture thread, I have more, and I am sure, others also. :approve:

Wild strawberry flower. The flower is actually no bigger then my baby finger nail, its a very tiny plant. It grows wild near my summer place.

I think we do too. I'm on the fence about those being Fuchsias in the background. I have never seen them grow off of such high stems like that. What is the variety?

Looks like Foxglove to me.

They looked like foxglove to me, too, but the blossoms seem elongated and droopy.

They are indeed a fuchsia, though we have lost the exact variety name. Looking through http://www.nwfuchsiasociety.com/" [Broken] I was amazed, as you may be, at the huge number of varieties out there. We did not see this one. I am posting some better pics in the soon to be opened Flower thread.

Edit:
We have sent a email with pics to the NW Fuchsia society looking for ID help.

The red flowers in the foreground of Integral's image to appear to be red foxglove, Digitalis purpurea or scrophulariaceae.

It looks similar to - http://cag.iinet.net.au/images/CAG00518.jpg

Unfortunately [itex] \partial [/itex] does not recall the name, but is certain that it was not Foxglove, she would remember that. But that does not mean it is not in the same family. I’ll bet there are as many varieties of Foxglove as there are fuchsia . I also see it as a Foxglove.
