SUMMARY

Valerie Plame was involved in a CIA operation focused on tracking the distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology related to Iran. The discussion highlights the implications of her outing by the Bush administration, which has been deemed treasonous due to the sensitive nature of her work. Despite the controversy surrounding her exposure, legal proceedings did not result in indictments, as the necessary covert conditions for prosecution were not met. The conversation underscores the significant impact of her outing on U.S. national security and intelligence operations concerning Iran.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of CIA operations and the Directorate of Operations
  • Knowledge of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (IIPA)
  • Familiarity with the implications of national security breaches
  • Awareness of the historical context of U.S.-Iran relations regarding nuclear proliferation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (IIPA) and its implications for covert agents
  • Study the history of U.S. intelligence operations in Iran, particularly regarding nuclear proliferation
  • Examine the legal proceedings surrounding the Plame affair and the role of Patrick Fitzgerald
  • Investigate the impact of media coverage on public perception of intelligence operations
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for intelligence analysts, legal professionals, historians, and anyone interested in the intersection of national security and media influence on public policy.

Novak outed her. Judith Miller never produced an article about Plame, but spent some time in jail for refusing to reveal who outed Plame to her. Richard Armitage, Ari Fleischer, Carl Rove and Scooter Libby are known to have told reporters about Plame's work with the CIA, but only Scooter got tagged. He took a bullet for Cheney and the gang, and he'll be well-rewarded when this administration winds down. Libby tried to reverse the flow of information in his testimony, saying that Tim Russert told him that Plame was a CIA agent. That was a bit ridiculous, since the whole second-string of the Bush administration seemed to be piling on her. The number of people who committed treason in this case is astounding. The lack of prosecutions is saddening, and bodes ill for the country. Due to classification, we may never know how many of Plame's assets, associates, or potential recruits were imprisoned, tortured or executed once foreign intelligence agencies got the word that this "businesswoman" who traveled to their countries was actually a CIA NOC agent. We will never know just how much damage the Bushie's did to our intelligence-gathering and our ability to throttle back nuclear proliferation (her mission in the CIA).

But Wilson did not do that until 2004. She was outed on July 14 03. It didn't matter what Wilson said by that time. Plame's outing and picture had been all over the news media for months.

And just to clarify your understatement.

Novak reported that the wife of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson is “an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction"

"worked at" and "Agency operative on WMD" are two very different job descriptions. Janitors work there.

I don't get your point. Are you stating that Plames outing was OK because the information came from the Vice Presidents office? Or are you just nit picking details?

btw turbo-1's post did not even include the term covert.

I'm diagnosing some derangement syndrome. Even when printed in black and white (in the same sentence) you cannot see the lie.

So what does traveling under a cover identity in true name mean? Do you loudly mention to all in earshot that you don't work for the CIA?
Under a cover identity in true name is self explanatory. Spies don't always wear disguises and use alliases

Travelling with her husband gave her the cover identity - that is plain Mrs Wilson, there only because her husband is - to undertake covert missions on behalf of her gov't who then shafted her.

Being married to a US ambassador is a TERRIBLE cover. They are the first to be suspected of espionage by the other side.

Now that's just funny!

As a credentialed diplomat, Joe Wilson would have at most been at most expelled from countries if he had been suspected of espionage. Plame would have been arrested, imprisoned, interrogated, and perhaps tortured if she was suspected to be involved in espionage. She may well have been executed. People don't realize that a NOC working for the CIA is one of the CIAs most valuable assets, and that they are at far greater risk than any agent with official cover. They, their assets, and their potential recruits are irreplaceable. The administration members who outed her deserve to be prosecuted as the traitors they are.

My sentiments exactly. Only with a little more emphasis!

The US has heavily armed the Shia (friends of Iran) and the IEDs have been linked to the Sunni insurgency and Al Qaida activities. Can you explain why the Iranian government would want to arm the Sunnis and Al Qaida with IED's? That's the responsibility of Bush's friends in Saudi Arabia. Aside from mere assertions, the administration has provided no evidence that the government of Iran is shipping IEDs or their components into Iraq. Remember the WMDs that Saddam had that made him a threat to the region? Remember the yellowcake that Saddam tried to buy from Niger? Remember the aluminum tubing that HAD to be intend for use in centrifuges in an enrichment plant, despite the fact that the material was unsuited for that purpose? All flimsy fabricated "evidence" and all discredited. Every time a new piece of "intelligence" needs to be touted, the administration fabricates it and pushes it out to a friendly patsy who "discovers" it and feeds it back to them, so the administration can leak it to the Bob Novaks, the Judith Millers, and the Tucker Carlsons of the world, who repeat it with NO attempt at confirmation or investigative journalism. These are GOP shills, not reporters. Their idea of getting independent confirmation is asking Paul Wolfowitz whether Karl Rove is lying.
