SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on a unique mirror observed in a hotel room in Dublin, Ireland, featuring two individual panes that appear to be silvered differently. Participants suggest that the size difference between the panes is due to a slight offset focus rather than intentional magnification. The color variation is speculated to be an artistic choice, possibly influenced by the application of make-up. The discussion concludes that the mirror serves a decorative purpose, reflecting a blend of functionality and aesthetic design.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mirror construction and silvering techniques
  • Knowledge of optical principles related to reflection and focus
  • Familiarity with artistic design choices in home decor
  • Basic awareness of materials used in mirror production, such as copper
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effects of different silvering techniques on mirror quality
  • Explore optical principles related to magnification and focus in reflective surfaces
  • Investigate artistic trends in mirror design and their functional implications
  • Learn about the properties of materials like copper in decorative applications
USEFUL FOR

Interior designers, home decor enthusiasts, optical engineers, and anyone interested in the interplay between functionality and aesthetics in mirror design.

This mirror has two individual panes, I assume silvered differently. Why? Is the magnification of the left pane intentional, a mounting effect or a consequence?

I appreciate whatever you may have to suggest,

I don't know about the coloring but the size difference appears to be due to a slightly offset focus.

EDIT: perhaps the color difference is supposed to be "artistic".

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the application of make-up.

I suspect it's not magnification, just that there are two mirrors and they're not quite in the same plane, so there's a discontinuity in the reflection at the join.

You said this was taken a month ago so I guess you can't go back and check, but you might well find that if you stand so you see one of your eyes on one half and the other on the other half, you do not see any reflection of your nose.

I believe it's copper what makes that kind of color.

Concur. Ask the hotel but this appears to be a decorative device that reflects as a mirror.

I'm guessing the shaded side is to reduce the visibility of one of the doubles, to help compensate for the Jameson.
