Power Line Radiation: Measuring EMF & Energy

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on measuring electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radiation emitted from utility power lines. Key resources include the Wikipedia article on electromagnetic radiation and health, and the IEEE 644-1994 standard, which outlines measurement techniques for magnetic fields from AC power lines. While the standard may be outdated, the measurement techniques remain relevant for auditing safety and assessing radiation levels. Users are advised to consult these resources for accurate methodologies.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic fields (EMF)
  • Familiarity with radiation measurement techniques
  • Knowledge of safety standards related to electromagnetic exposure
  • Access to IEEE 644-1994 standard documentation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research current EMF measurement tools and devices
  • Study the latest updates on electromagnetic radiation safety standards
  • Explore methodologies for long-term EMF monitoring
  • Investigate the health impacts of EMF exposure based on recent studies
USEFUL FOR

Utility engineers, safety auditors, environmental health professionals, and anyone involved in assessing the safety of electromagnetic radiation from power lines.

How do we determine the amount of radiation, EMF, and/or energy emitted from a utility line carry an electric circuit? How do we measure the amount of radiation emitted from the utility line over a time period?

Do you mean in general or to audit for safety or something?

You might want to start in the references to this article. Some look promising.

If you're interested in the 'how' then I believe this is the relevant standard, from 1994 anyway. Limits might have changed but I doubt the measurement technique changed much. You'll probably have to pay to get a more recent one. The document below does assume knowledge in the field.
