Quantum Randomness and Free Will

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the relationship between quantum randomness or uncertainty and the concept of free will. Participants explore whether principles from quantum physics can inform or support arguments regarding free will, with a focus on the implications of measurement and determinism.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question whether quantum randomness implies the existence of free will, seeking clarification on the definition of 'free will.'
  • One participant emphasizes that the discussion should be grounded in physics, suggesting that contributions must be informed by valid references and knowledge of the subject.
  • A participant references the Free Will Theorem, indicating that it may provide relevant insights into the discussion.
  • Another participant suggests that inquiries should focus on the relationship between complementarity and measurement independence in the context of determinism.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus, as there are multiple competing views regarding the implications of quantum randomness for free will and the necessary criteria for discussion.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the definitions of free will and the assumptions underlying the relationship between quantum mechanics and philosophical concepts. The discussion also highlights a dependence on valid references and knowledge of physics.

Does quantum randomness or uncertainty tells us that we have free will?

Physics news on Phys.org
This discussion should be based strictly on physics and not on a matter of opinion or tastes (i.e. you have to know the physics before offering your responses). Use of valid references is encouraged. If it doesn't follow this criteria, this thread will suffer from the same fate as previous threads on this same topic - it will be moved to the Philosophy forum.

So you decide!

What do you mean by 'free will'?

you have to ask specifically about complimentarity/uncomplimentarity relationship on
measurement independence and determinism.
