Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the properties and effects of a 2.5% active chlorine solution, referred to as sanitary water, when used for cleaning. Participants explore its volatility, potential for oxidation of metals, and implications for household use.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that 2.5% active chlorine is volatile and can oxidize metals and other objects in the home.
  • Another participant points out that straight bleach is around 8% hypochlorite, suggesting that 2.5% is significantly less concentrated but still strong and caustic, with a high pH.
  • A participant from Brazil describes the daily use of the product for bathroom cleaning and raises concerns about its volatility and potential to cause corrosion on metals and electronics.
  • One participant mentions that the product referred to as sanitary water in Brazil is known as "gray water" in the US, indicating a difference in terminology.
  • A later reply suggests that previous threads on the topic exist, implying a lack of satisfactory answers to the original poster's concerns.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the volatility and corrosive effects of the chlorine solution, with no consensus reached on the extent of its impact on household items.

Contextual Notes

There are references to previous discussions on the topic, but specific assumptions or limitations regarding the chemical behavior of chlorine in household environments remain unresolved.

Straight bleach is around 8% hypochlorite so 2.5% is about a third of that. Yes, very strong and caustic too. pH 11-12! It will smell strongly of bleach and can oxidize metals given enough time with poor ventilation.

In the US, sanitary water is known as “gray water.”

Here in Brazil this product has 2.5% active chlorine and my family use it every day in bathroom cleaning for a few minutes the bottle is open so I thought this is volatile evaporates it spreads through the house and goes down depositing on metals, appliances electronics and DVD discs causing them to corrode?

You already have several threads on this same topic. It seems that since we do not give you an answer that you want, rather than one that is correct, we cannot help you.
