Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the current status of quantum cosmology, including its observations, theoretical scope, leading research candidates, and comparisons between different approaches such as loop quantum cosmology and string cosmology. The conversation touches on both theoretical and observational aspects of the field.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the current status of quantum cosmology and whether it includes phenomena beyond the Planck era.
  • Another participant mentions various approaches to quantum cosmology, including loop quantum cosmology (LQC), noncommutative geometry, causal dynamical triangulation, twister theory, and asymptotic safety, suggesting a diversity in the field.
  • Concerns are raised about the lack of observational data supporting theories of quantum cosmology, with one participant noting that existing experiments like LIGO/VIRGO may be the closest relevant observations.
  • There is a distinction made between quantum cosmology and quantum gravity, with some participants suggesting that the terms may be used interchangeably in this context.
  • One participant emphasizes that the question of respect between loop quantum cosmology and string cosmology is not a useful physics question, as it is more about testing predictions against data rather than subjective opinions.
  • Another participant suggests that the leading candidates in quantum cosmology research can be identified by reviewing the literature.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty regarding the observational status of quantum cosmology and whether it extends beyond the Planck era. There is no consensus on the leading candidates in research or the comparative respect of different theoretical approaches.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge the speculative nature of quantum cosmology and the challenges in obtaining empirical data due to the high-energy scales involved. The discussion reflects a range of perspectives without resolving the complexities of the field.

TL;DR
questions
what is the current status of the field for quantum cosmology, are there any observations that support any theory of quantum cosmology?

is it just cosmology during the Planck era or does it extend past the Planck era.

what are the leading candidates into research into quantum cosmology and which physics departments research it?

how much respect does loop quantum cosmology has compared to string cosmology with actual cosmologists?

Since this question is a day old and noone answered you’re gonna get a hack answer:

It’s a diverse field. There’s as you you’ve ascertained LQC. Also Alain Conne’s Noncmmutative geometry, casual dynamical triangulation, twister theory, asymptotic safety and a couple of others. Penrose and Woit seems to be going with the twister idea.

All this is way over my head though, so maybe someone who knows what they’re talking about would like to comment…?

As far as observations and experiments go I think it’s pretty barren. It’s simply too high energy to probe. LIGO/VIRGO may be the closest yet.

EDIT: But again: I’m just a hack.

Oh and just for the record. I realize you asked about quantum cosmology but I implicitly took that to mean quantum gravity.

As I said, I’m just a hack.

so any cosmologists here can explain the status of quantum cosmology, and its leading candidates?

I don't want to be a p.... about it but have you tried to consult Wikipedia or the link @pinball1970 gave you?

It's a very new and speculative field.

No.

It's too early to tell.

This is a question you'll need to answer by looking at the literature.

This is not a physics question and can't be answered usefully here. Physics is not about "respect", it's about testing predictions of models against data. Since, as above, that can't be usefully done at this point with quantum cosmology, anything anyone says is speculative.

And with that, this thread will remain closed.
