Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire for a fun, recreational physics read that covers topics like gravity, electricity, and mechanics without being overly technical.
  • Another participant suggests a specific book, linking to it as a potential recommendation.
  • A different participant shares a link to another book, implying it may be suitable for the original poster's needs.
  • One participant warns against starting with "The Road to Reality" by Roger Penrose, noting its complexity.
  • Another participant recommends "Understanding Physics" by Isaac Asimov as a good option for beginners.
  • A participant mentions enjoying "The Big Book of Physics and Math," indicating it may be a worthwhile read.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present various recommendations, but there is no consensus on a single best book. Some participants caution against certain titles due to their complexity, while others suggest different options without clear agreement on the best choice.

Contextual Notes

Participants have different preferences for the style and depth of the books, which may affect their recommendations. Some suggestions may depend on individual tastes in writing style and approach to physics.

I'm looking for a book to explain Physics at an absolute beginner level.

This is not something I'm trying to study or memorize, so I'd rather it not be a textbook, but rather a book that tells of different parts of physics (gravity, electricity, mechanics) in simple terms that the "average" person can understand. I don't mind a little math, either. I'm basically just looking for a fun, recreational physics read.

Any book recommendations?

I like to these writers

Wow.. don't even think to start with "road to reality" by penrose although it is a very good book it gets VERY hard too soon.

Understanding Physics, by Isaac Asimov, would probably be good for you.

I picked up "The Big Book of Physics and Math" and I'm loving it so far!
