Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for textbooks in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, focusing on accessibility and engagement for learners. Participants share their experiences and opinions on various texts suitable for different levels of study.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for recommendations for good thermodynamics textbooks.
  • Another participant suggests "Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach" as a suitable text.
  • A different participant mentions Fermi's "Thermodynamics," noting its accessibility despite it not being a traditional textbook.
  • "Heat and Thermodynamics" by Mark W. Zemansky and Richard H. Dittman is recommended by another participant.
  • There is a repeated inquiry about accessible statistical mechanics textbooks.
  • Daniel V. Schroeder's "Introduction to Thermal Physics" is highlighted as engaging, though some participants express concerns about its suitability for self-study due to a lack of solutions to problems.
  • Recommendations for statistical mechanics include "Introductory Statistical Mechanics" by Roger Bowley and Mariana Sanchez, and "Statistical Physics" by Franz Mandl.
  • One participant expresses gratitude for the recommendations received.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of the recommended texts, but there is no consensus on which is the best or most accessible, as opinions vary on the suitability of certain books for self-study.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations may depend on the reader's prior knowledge and learning style, and there are mentions of varying opinions on the effectiveness of certain texts for self-study.

Who can recommend some good thermodynamics textbooks? thanks

And I also want to ask which book of statistical mechanics are good and accessible? thanks

Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach

Fermi's "Thermodynamics" is quite good.

Edit-oops, it's not a textbook. But it's still a very accessible book. And cheap (Dover edition).

"Heat and Thermodynamics" by Mark W. Zemansky and Richard H. Dittman

I found Daniel V. Schroeder's Introduction to Thermal Physics an engaging and accessible introduction to both thermodynamics and basic statistical mechanics. I'm surprised to see so many Amazon reviews panning it, though some make the good point that it may not be best for self-study since it doesn't include answers/solutions to problems.

Of course, should you run into trouble with anything in whatever text you end up checking out, you know you can bring it to this site for help.

"Introductory Statistical Mechanics" by Roger Bowley and Mariana Sanchez

"Statistical Physics" by Franz Mandl

Thank u all for your kindly help!
