It was a record breaking 113 F in Los Angeles today. 99 even at the beach! I don't think I would survive the night at my place. I am camping out at a hotel with air conditioning. With my cat.

I want to live here.

Eheheh. You have a lot of insulation, eh?

Not to worry.. it was 70 deg here today, but 93% humidity :frown:

*whisper*...seattle...seattle...seattle...

This is great. Jelly wants me to have room service send up a bowl of tuna fish, but I said that was over the top.

Or maybe the North Pole. Or the South one. Which one doesn't have penguins?

Luck you. It's suppose to be in the upper 30s one morning this coming weekend here.

Good grief, that's crazy!]

I'm so glad you and jelly went to a hotel!

The north and complex poles don't have penguins.. But their close derivatives, the pengwuinos seem to be spreading everywhere lately.. hmm just noticed how pengwuino sounds like a guido penguin.. penguido.. pengwuino... strange.

Oh, come on, a nice tuna sandwich, how often does she get to go to a hotel. Live it up!

She's still upset that we're not at the Ritz Carlton eating tiny spoonfuls of caviar.

With her own cat traner, cat spa, and massuese.

When is the heat wave supposed to end?

It's going to be hot tomorrow, but not as [STRIKE]ridiculously[/STRIKE] ridonkulously hot as today. Wednesday the temps are supposed to start dropping into the 80s. I'll be checking out tomorrow morning.

I had dinner on the restaurant patio tonight, and watched a stunning sunset over the water. I went swimming. I had a cocktail. It's like a mini vacation. Ooh, now, I should pick a movie from the TV. Maybe "Get Him to the Greek"?

Or you could listen to a John and his date doing it in the next room

Or do the Stewie thing to drug dealers room and yell 'he is wearing a wire!'

Stay another day MIH, don't go back to that sweltering apartment, the heat in the walls and floors is going to be like an oven.

Yeah, you don't want to live in Seattle. They have that stuff on the roads called... what is it again... oh yes, traffic.

113 in LA is horrible! Good call on getting the hotel.

113 is brutal!

Wow. That's hot! And in late September, no less.

The hottest I ever saw in Vegas was 117, but most summer days it hovered around 104.

Good news - it's slated to be only 97 today, and all the way down to 90 tomorrow.

And are you at the beach or do you need to work? It has been raining here non-stop for the past two months, I found out this morning that a mouse has taken refuge in my apartment and feasted on the trash can.

Jesus girl. For the money you spent on that "vacation", you could have bought a window-unit and ask a few (3) of your guys friends who are good at that sort of thing to come over and install it for you.

Her landlord won't allow air conditioning units to be installed.

You know MIH I do remember you messing around with air conditioner designs. All you really need is just a fan and a bag of ice.

I've been thinking of designing a HEPA air filter + UV germicidal lamp + air cooling unit myself. A sort of an air conditioner that you don't hang off a window, but rather that just stays in the middle of a room. I think the total cost of parts to be around 400 bucks, but its worth a project

We (UK) have portable air conditioning units which sit inside your room and you just put a flexible hose (about 6 inch diameter) out of a window (ideally you have a pre-cut hole, but for the purpose of instant cool you can just stuff it out a window). They go for around £100 - £200 so not that expensive in comparison to a hotel (although I'd hate to see your electric bill).

Do you not have such devices in the US?

I have one of those as well, the only problem with them is where to put the unit the other 360 days of the year when it is not hot..

Yes, we have them. I've used one before. Two things about it that I didn't like: it was loud, and when the condensation container would fill a loud alarm would sound. Not nice waking up to that every two or three hours !

mugaliens,

FYI, and others who are interested. If you are ever planning to fly mid-day from an airport where the temp is 120 F or above, check with your air carrier before heading off to the airport. I was in Phoenix not long ago, and they cancel flights because... big drumroll here... you are dying to know aren't you... it is because the hot air does not provide enough "lift" for fully loaded jets to take off, the runways are too short.

I am sure partially fueled, partially passangered (is that a word ? I hope so) would be allowed. A good rule of thumb is that if your flight is heading to a hub, say Charlotte, NC, there is a good chance it is full, and is subject to cancellation, or if the airlines got creative, they could offer a number passengers (up to the safe weight takeoff limit) a free flight to go on standby. The bottom line is, once the temp's are over 120 F it is a brave new world where we have not gone before as far as flying is concerned, something to keep in the back of your mind.

Rhody...

Well I live in South Wales, so you can imagine how important air con is to me

If she has an unused or rarely used room, just open the window in that room, cut a hole in the door that leads to that room, and install the air conditioner in the door. The landlord won't even notice.

I wish I had air conditioning maybe a week or two each year - especially now that the big shade tree in the back yard is dead. Used to only get direct Sun on the house around 4:00 PM and later - now the direct Sun starts a lot earlier in the afternoon.

But with fall, the Sun isn't getting as far North in the sky, so it's not as much of a problem even on the warm days.

Seattle traffic is a lot more laid-back than LA traffic, and it comes with good coffee, but traffic is still traffic.
