SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers around a record-breaking heat wave in Los Angeles, where temperatures reached 113°F, prompting one user to seek refuge in a hotel with air conditioning. Participants shared their experiences with extreme heat, including the challenges of living without air conditioning and the benefits of portable units. The conversation also touched on the implications of high temperatures for air travel, specifically how temperatures above 120°F can affect flight operations. Users exchanged tips on cooling solutions and expressed their frustrations with the heat.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of temperature measurement and its impact on daily life.
  • Familiarity with air conditioning systems, including portable and window units.
  • Knowledge of the effects of humidity on comfort levels.
  • Awareness of aviation principles related to temperature and flight safety.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research portable air conditioning units and their effectiveness in extreme heat.
  • Explore the principles of thermodynamics as they relate to air travel and lift.
  • Investigate the impact of humidity on perceived temperature and comfort.
  • Learn about local regulations regarding air conditioning installation in rental properties.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for individuals living in hot climates, homeowners considering air conditioning options, travelers concerned about flight safety in extreme temperatures, and anyone interested in effective cooling solutions during heat waves.

I have two portable room AC units (vent hose out the sindow) but they just weren't keeping up during out heat wave, so I bought a Friedrich window unit. The portables are back in storage now, and the window unit will come out soon. October is usually quite tolerable. Anyway... 113? I was wilting when we had weeks of highs in the 90s.

Huh? We always knew about this, when attempting to take off from hot / high altitude areas you have to perform a calculation to check you can get enough lift to get off the ground.

jarednjames,

I agree, pilots are well informed, and FAA rules are in place to handle it, but the swirling mass of humanity out there that flies commercial flights (for the most part) isn't. Once we have a number of days that exceed 120 however, they will be in short order, you can be sure of that. That will be one more thing to consider when flying to parts of the world with temps above 120.

Rhody... sputter... sputter... gasp... gasp... I think I can take off, I think I can...

The only weeks in the 90s Wales ever have are the ones in the last decade of the century.

Seriously, we've got the central heating on here, bloody freezing!

I do have a portable A/C unit that I use, but it would have been no match for the conditions yesterday. It just doesn't blow cold and hard enough, and my place was an oven yesterday afternoon. My apartment is a heat trap because it has a funny shape, and it is an upstairs unit with a black roof.

Stay another day MIH, don't go back to that sweltering apartment, the heat in the walls and floors is going to be like an oven.

I was so tempted, but the marine layer came in this morning and I think it's going to hang in there. I think we'll be OK.

That room was worth every penny. I was cool as a cucumber, even a little cold! It's a little boutique hotel with a beautiful view of the marina. This morning at breakfast they had black and white cow coffee creamers on the tables. :!)

I loathe heat... if it's cold you can just keep layering... if it's hot you can't get past naked (enjoy that image, heh). Heat... is the pits, and if you add humidity it's hell on earth.

Give me a nice chilly morning any day over heat (not that I get a choice in the matter). I love a crisp winter morning, hate waking up and feeling hot and sweaty.

I agree 100%... I love the bracing feel of fall and winter, it really makes you feel alive. I'd add, you then really appreciate the warmth indoors, so it's a bit like a fine wine, enhancing the total experience while having its own unique benefits.

Heat is just unpleasant as a climate (saunas, hot-tub and such aside).

Apparently.

And Evo? I agree whole-heartedly. Your bolding is totally CLASS!

Getting hot under the collar? Perhaps you need to find a heat refuge. Check out MIH's "heat refugee" thread.

There is a quote button?? Remember if your car overheats in the hot weather you are supposed to turn the heater on.:bugeye:

It's those little touches, that extra attention to detail, that make a stay memorable. Cow-shaped creamers are a hallmark of good taste.

And the food at their restaurant was wonderful! I had mahi mahi with a tropical salsa, sauteed spinach, and steamed garden vegetables.

I have to go back because I want to try their filet, which they describe as "served with a Blue Cheese Garlic Butter finished with roasted Pine Nuts". :!)

It has been raining here non-stop for the past two months, I found out this morning that a mouse has taken refuge in my apartment and feasted on the trash can.

So you have a new pet? What did you name him?
