Programs REU and SULI Status Report COVID-19

Click For Summary
A student mentoring discussion highlights the shift to remote internships due to current circumstances, specifically mentioning a SULI summer internship at Brookhaven National Laboratory. While there is disappointment over not participating in-person, the remote format is seen as a preferable alternative to cancellation. Other students awaiting updates on their summer research internships are receiving positive indications that opportunities may still proceed. The Cornell Nanoscale Facility's REU program has been canceled, raising concerns about the feasibility of remote participation in programs reliant on physical access to facilities. Overall, there is hope that many internships can adapt to remote formats successfully.

One student I mentor has reported that their SULI summer internship at Brookhaven National Laboratory has been modified to be remote (via internet) rather than in person. While there is some disappointment not being able to contribute to an experimental project in person, there is understanding that in the circumstance, this was a favorable outcome compared with cancellation.

The other students I mentor are still waiting on final word about their summer research internship opportunities, though they are getting positive signals that suggest a high probability of things moving forward one way or the other.

I thought it might be nice to have a thread here for folks to share information on statuses.

The Cornell Nanoscale Facility's REU program has been cancelled. Obviously working remotely is tricky for a program whose main benefit is access to a great academic cleanroom, but I hope that most REUs/internships are able to switch to being remote. I'm glad BNL has moved in that direction.

Hello everyone :) I’m currently a third-year undergraduate student in Electrical Engineering at a college (not a highly ranked one). Since my first year, I’ve known that I want to continue to a master’s degree—only at a university—and my long-term goal is to work in research and development in the space industry. My first preference is pursuing an M.Sc. in Physics. I truly enjoy physics, constantly try to expand my knowledge, and the main reason I even chose Electrical Engineering was...
