Former President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. The 39th president of the United States was a Georgia peanut farmer who sought to restore trust in government when he assumed the presidency in 1977 and then built a reputation for tireless work as a humanitarian. He earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

He died Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care, at his home in Plains, Georgia.

At age 52, Carter was sworn in as president on Jan. 20, 1977, after defeating President Gerald R. Ford in the 1976 general election. Carter left office on Jan. 20, 1981, following his 1980 general election loss to Ronald Reagan.

A very good person. He was instrumental in brokering peace between Israel and Egypt. But he had the misfortune of being President during the Iran hostage crisis and an period of unparalleled high inflation. A humanitarian whose life was all about serving others.

An extraordinary human being.

He and Rosalynn set up the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering. In conjunction with Emory University, it was instrumental in virtually irradicating the Guinea worm disease that infected as many as 3.5M persons in 1986. Only 13 cases were reported in 2022. Work continues on other diseases including malaria.
