SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a CGI video featuring Boston Dynamics robots that appears disturbingly realistic, highlighting the ethical implications of depicting robot abuse. The video, shared by user @nsaspook, evokes strong emotional responses, drawing parallels to past media portrayals of machines retaliating against their mistreatment, such as in The Twilight Zone. Participants express discomfort with the idea of harming functional technology, emphasizing the moral responsibility of engineers in creating and testing machines responsibly.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of CGI and motion capture technology
  • Familiarity with Boston Dynamics robotics
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations in technology and engineering
  • Awareness of cultural references in media, such as The Twilight Zone
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of CGI on public perception of robotics
  • Explore ethical guidelines for robotics engineering
  • Investigate the history and advancements of Boston Dynamics robots
  • Analyze media portrayals of technology and their societal implications
USEFUL FOR

Even though it was just a robot, I didn't enjoy watching them abuse it.

Me neither. The Twilight Zone had an episode once where a guy would abuse his typewriter and other machines and they fought back to make his life miserable.

I think its hard to see people (trying to) break a perfectly working machine. Its just the same as when someone tries to blend a brand new high-end smart phone while its running some nifty app ...

That's the job of an good engineer, make it and break it. Soap, lather, rinse and repeat. The guys at Boeing should have been kicking MCAS even harder.
