Sectors in String theory and the N-S N-S sector

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

A 'sector' in string theory refers to distinct regions of the theory that describe different types of physical states. The N-S N-S sector, which stands for Neveu-Schwarz, specifically describes fermionic states that exhibit periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions on closed strings. This sector is crucial for understanding the behavior of fermions in string theory. For a comprehensive introduction to string theory, including a detailed explanation of sectors, refer to the resource available at arXiv: hep-th/0207142.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of string theory concepts
  • Familiarity with fermionic states in quantum physics
  • Knowledge of boundary conditions in theoretical physics
  • Access to arXiv for research papers
NEXT STEPS
  • Read "hep-th/0207142" for an introduction to string theory and sectors
  • Explore the implications of Neveu-Schwarz boundary conditions on fermions
  • Investigate the differences between N-S N-S and R-R (Ramond-Ramond) sectors
  • Study the role of sectors in the context of string compactifications
USEFUL FOR

The discussion is beneficial for theoretical physicists, string theorists, and students seeking to deepen their understanding of string theory and its various sectors.

Hey folks,

Can someone explain what is meant by a 'sector' in string theory, or provide links/refs. I've tried a search on google and xxx.lanl.gov but nothing very useful turns up.

Also, what is the N-S N-S sector (I know it stands for Neveu Schwarz). I think its a description of fermions that are periodic / anti periodic on a closed string, is this about right??

Any help appreciated!
