Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of pursuing a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) for someone with a background in microbiology. It explores concerns about job prospects, prerequisite knowledge, and the necessity of a second bachelor's degree versus a master's degree.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses concern about whether a background in microbiology would be viewed as a deficit by employers in the EE field.
  • Another participant questions the original poster's preparedness for a master's program, asking about their prerequisite knowledge and the likelihood of acceptance into the program.
  • The original poster acknowledges the rigorous nature of the master's program and mentions the need to complete 1.5 years of prerequisites, expressing uncertainty about acceptance.
  • A different participant suggests that obtaining a second bachelor's degree might be more beneficial, particularly for meeting state or provincial requirements for employment in certain areas.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on whether pursuing a master's or a second bachelor's degree is the better option. There are competing views regarding the adequacy of the microbiology background for entering the EE field.

Contextual Notes

Participants discuss the implications of educational background on job prospects without resolving the specific requirements or acceptance criteria for master's programs in EE.

I would like to get my Masters in EE, but I would just like to make sure that I can get a job in the field with a bachelors in...microbiology. Or would employers think of this as a deficit, preferring to see a solid foundation with a BS in EE instead?

Thanks

Why do you think you can handle a masters in EE? Do you have all the prerequisite knowledge?
Why do you think a masters program will accept you?

I understand that the masters program is rigorous and know that I will have to take 1.5 years' worth of prerequisites. Will they accept me? I don't know.

But, even with my current degree, would it be better for me to take the prerequisites and get a masters rather than to get a 2nd bachelors?

I think it is better for you to go for a bachelor's degree because, in order to work in some states/provinces, you need to have a bachelor's degree
