Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the fate of a white moose in Norway, specifically whether it should be protected or hunted during the moose hunting season. Participants explore various perspectives on the rarity of white moose, the implications of hunting them, and the emotional responses elicited by the situation.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express a desire to protect the white moose, citing its beauty and rarity.
  • Others mention that while white moose are not common, they are not extremely rare either, with estimates suggesting around five white moose exist at any given time in Scandinavia.
  • There is a discussion about whether the white moose is an albino or a separate species, with some asserting they are albinos with varying degrees of pigmentation.
  • A poll indicates that a significant majority of participants believe the moose should be spared.
  • Some participants share humorous or light-hearted comments regarding the moose's name and its perceived status among moose.
  • Updates on the moose's status reveal that hunters have decided to spare its life, and it has been captured on video.
  • There is mention of a new white moose calf being spotted, suggesting continuity in the presence of white moose in the area.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the sentiment to protect the white moose, but there are differing views on the implications of hunting and the biological status of white moose. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the broader ethical considerations of hunting such rare animals.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express emotional responses to the idea of hunting the white moose, indicating a cultural or aesthetic value placed on it. The discussion also touches on the biological aspects of moose populations and the implications of hunting regulations.

Presently, a white moose is trundling about in the deep, Norwegian woods..whenever he doesn't go into Mrs. Kirsten Hansen's garden to eat some fruit, that is.

However, the moose hunting season is upon us, and a fierce debate has been sparked here in Norway whether or not the moose should be felled.

Some hunters have said they won't shoot him if they meet him, but others say that there is nothing stated in the conditions of their permit about the colour of legitimate prey.
Here's a photo of the moose by Mrs. Hansen:

What is the opinion of PF'ers?
(I don't know how to make one of those fancy polls, I'm afraid..)

Are these albinos or a separate species?

They are albinos, but very few are full albinos, most have some pigmentation left.

Do not kill the white moose! Now I'm really upset, it's pretty.

According to the article, there are about half a million moose in Scandinavia, and the interviewed professor estimates the number of white moose to be around 5 at any given time.

Indeed it is. I agree with you, there are lots of other moose to shoot out in the woods.

I think that's reason enough to not hunt it.

Moose update:

Of 30000 poll participants, 80 percent think the moose should live.

At the moment, there is a naming contest going on, the name "Albin" is leading, with "Albin Laden" on second place..

The second time I read this I realized that, though I've heard this word many times, I've never bothered to check its meaning:

Main Entry: 1trun·dle
Pronunciation: 'tr&n-d&l
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): trun·dled; trun·dling /'tr&n(d)-li[ng], 'tr&n-d&l-i[ng]/
Etymology: 2trundle
transitive verb
1 a : to propel by causing to rotate : ROLL <a...child who was trundling a hoop -- Charles Dickens> b archaic : to cause to revolve : SPIN
2 : to transport in or as if in a wheeled vehicle : HAUL, WHEEL <trundled him off to school>
intransitive verb
1 : to progress by revolving
2 : to move on or as if on wheels : ROLL <buses trundling through the city>
- trun·dler /'tr&n(d)-l&r, 'tr&n-d&l-&r/ noun

So, I wonder if this moose is really trundling through the woods of Norway. If so, what we have here may be more remarkable than a mere white moose.

Albin update:

The hunters have decided to spare the life of Albin, the White Moose.

Moreover, one of them, Mr. Onsaker, has captured Albin live on this video:

Albin is, it seems, still alive and well.
Scroll down the following page, for a video clip of Albin.in-action (Note, Albin is the FIRST person in the clip, the other is an old man):
