Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a recent discovery reported by Sky News, which has sparked interest and speculation regarding a peculiar formation observed in a photograph, potentially on Mars. Participants explore various interpretations of the image, questioning its nature and origin, while also considering the implications of the Martian environment.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants humorously suggest that the formation could be related to mythical creatures, such as Sasquatch or the "Abominable Marsman."
  • One participant expresses skepticism about the formation resembling a walking being, proposing it could be a "Mars Woman" in a skirt, while questioning the natural formation of such a rock.
  • Another participant notes that the Martian atmosphere, despite being thin, has winds that could erode rocks, potentially explaining unusual shapes.
  • A participant asserts the formation is simply a rock, emphasizing the lack of scale in the image and suggesting it may have been altered or exaggerated in the reporting.
  • Concerns are raised about the reliability of the image, with one participant referencing the original photograph's context and suggesting it may be a manipulated image.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of interpretations regarding the nature of the formation, with no consensus reached. Some view it as a natural rock formation, while others entertain more fantastical explanations. The discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight the absence of scale in the image, which complicates the assessment of the formation's size and nature. There are also concerns about the authenticity of the image, with references to potential alterations.

No, it's the Abominable Marsman.

The legs are not separate. It doesn't look like a walking being, unless it's a Mars Woman instead, and is wearing a skirt. I would like to know, however, how such a rock could be formed naturally. The arm doesn't look natural for a rock. I could more easily expect rocks of strange shapes in places where there is water.

Martian atmosphere is thin, but there are winds that carry sand, which can erode the rocks.

It's a rock.

Integral adds:
1. You are given no scale, is that 1" or 100'
2.From the article:
But a space fan spotted the figure, which was just a pinprick in the original photograph. It was blown up and posted on a website.
It's a photochop.
