Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of smart goggles designed to assist individuals in locating lost items, with a particular focus on their potential benefits for people with memory issues, such as dementia. Participants explore the practicality, aesthetics, and social implications of such technology.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express enthusiasm for the idea of smart goggles as a backup memory tool, questioning their appearance and societal acceptance.
  • Others argue that the perceived nerdiness of the goggles should not overshadow their potential benefits for individuals with dementia.
  • A participant recalls past fashion trends, suggesting that the goggles may eventually become more fashionable over time.
  • Concerns are raised about whether individuals with severe memory issues would understand the purpose of the goggles or remember to use them effectively.
  • Humor is used in the discussion, with some participants sharing light-hearted comments about personal experiences related to memory and losing items.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the potential utility of smart goggles for memory assistance, particularly for dementia patients, but there is no consensus on their aesthetic appeal or the practicality of use for those with severe memory impairments. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the social acceptance of the technology.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the effectiveness of the goggles for different types of memory loss are not fully explored, and the discussion does not address specific technological capabilities or limitations of the proposed device.

They only look nerdy and foolish at first, but If you recall, Bono had those yellow shades he kept wearing 10-15 years ago, they looked stupid but he kept wearing them and kept wearing them and finally...they never caught on.

If it can really help a dementia patient be a little more independent then who cares how nerdy they look!

PS Hmm, the fashion-conscious dementia patient population obviously for starters

I guess some one with a very bad memory will forget they have them on.

You mean like putting one pair of glasses on over another, like I'm always doing?

Lacy... how is it that you have that many posts and I've never seen you before?
Aside from that huge, shiny, triangular nose, you're kinda cute. :-p

... so that Smart Goggle will become more fashionable in the matter of looks and size in the years to come.

There's a lifetime achievement award in the making if that ever happens.

Wouldn't someone with severe dementia get confused and not understand why they were wearing the glasses?

Someone with short term memory (think of the movie Memento) may forget what the glasses do, and remove them.

Although my ex-husband would benefit greatly from these, I've never known anyone to lose his keys, wallet, planner, sunglasses, etc at least once a week. I mean LOSE them, never to be found again.
