SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the reaction of copper (60um) electroplated on a 100nm gold seed layer when immersed in a solution of potassium iodide (KI) and iodine (I2). Participants identify the "grey compound" as likely being copper iodide (CuI) or a related copper compound formed during the reaction. The copper layer remains intact beneath this compound, and methods for safely removing the grey layer without damaging the underlying copper are sought.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electroplating processes and materials.
  • Knowledge of chemical reactions involving copper and iodine compounds.
  • Familiarity with methods for chemical compound removal.
  • Basic chemistry terminology related to compounds and reactions.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties and reactions of copper iodide (CuI).
  • Learn about safe chemical removal techniques for copper compounds.
  • Investigate the electrochemical behavior of copper in iodine solutions.
  • Explore methods for analyzing and confirming the presence of compounds on metal surfaces.
USEFUL FOR

Chemists, materials scientists, and anyone involved in electroplating or metal surface treatment will benefit from this discussion.

Copper + (KI + I2) = ?

Hi all,

I have put some copper (60um - electroplated on a gold seed layer of 100nm) in the following solution: KI + I2
The copper is still there, but is now covered by a thick layer of a "grey compound"... Huh

I'm really dummy in chemistry... can you help me to find out the formula of that compound ?
How can I remove it without destroy the copper ?

Thanks a lot!

What was underneath the gold and how do you know the copper layer is still there?
