Hey, while we're on the subject of derailing threads  ...

Didn't Russ recently mention he had a lead on a woman to ask out? What's the scoop on that Russ? You owe it to the PF women to keep us posted on your eligibility status.

Oh crap. It is Valentine's weekend, isn't it?

I may need to rethink this...

Yes, it's Valentine's weekend. And, no, no rethinking, other than you should plan to make reservations if you're going out somewhere since most places will be pretty booked. You don't want to suddenly leave her without a Valentine's date. It also makes it easy to call her after the date...you can call her on Monday to wish her a happy Valentine's day or drop by with some chocolate. Then you're off the hook for a whole year to win her over before you make the blunder of forgetting it's Valentine's day.

We're going out with some friends (about 8 people) Friday to the resteraunt where my brother tends bar.

Should I seriously be thinking about this? I mean... for starters... I abso-****ing-lutely hate Valentine's Day with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

A more realistic reason (considering what I think doesn't affect public opinion much) is that I don't exactly think we're to that point of seriousness yet. Isn't it a kinda bad move to go all with the Valentine and the lovey-dovey out right at the beginning when you're still feeling each other out (so to speak  )? I've only gotten to talk to her (without friends present) for about a half hour...

We're going with mutual friends, and I'm going to be meeting her there, so any sort of gift would most likely embarrass her unless it is something easily pocketable.

 I'm so clueless.

Valentine's doesn't have to mean lovey-dovey (I understand your feeling on that one...people do go over the top, I mean, they pull out the little candy hearts in their avatars and everything ) But, having a date for Valentine's day is sort of like having a date for the prom. You're happy to go out with someone who is just a friend or on a first date as long as you're not the only one who doesn't have a date. If anything, I think it helps take the pressure off a bit. But then, I'm not your typical woman when it comes to things like Valentine's day, so maybe I shouldn't give you advice when it comes to this.

But, we're talking about post-date follow-up. Friday night isn't Valentine's day yet, but if you hit it off and are interested in more dates, then swing by with or send her some flowers or a heart-shaped box of candy. Don't want to be too sickeningly lovey-dovey, then on the note, write something simple, like, "Enjoyed Friday night, looking forward to seeing you again."

Besides, if the whole idea of the holiday bothers you, then this is a really good way to find out early on, before it's more than just a few dates, if you have similar views on things like that. If you're not the sappy romantic who wants to gush over Hallmark-inspired holidays, and she would be furious to be home alone on Valentine's day because you're stuck in the lab working late on a weeknight, then it makes life easy to sort that out quickly.
