A Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis is available online

AI Thread Summary
Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis is now available online, generating significant interest and numerous requests from the public. Cambridge University noted it as the most-requested work in its open repository, leading to a new policy requiring all graduates to provide digital copies of their theses. The thesis, titled "Properties of Expanding Universes," includes discussions on singularities and energy conditions, which are crucial concepts in cosmology. Some users expressed difficulty in studying the PDF format and inquired about a plain text version, while others engaged in discussions about specific content within the thesis. The availability of this thesis marks an important step in promoting open access to academic research.

Stephen Hawking makes his doctoral thesis available online

Cambridge University said the paper was the "most-requested" work for its open repository, receiving "hundreds" of requests. It'll also help open the floodgates. All Cambridge graduates will have to offer digital copies of their theses from now on, and they're being encouraged to make them public.

Is there a plain txt copy of the doctoral?
It's hard to study it this way..

Sorry, that makes no sense. 1) What is so difficult about reading a PDF copy? 2) How can there be a plain text version with diagrams?

Hello.

Today I've downloaded and taken a look at Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis in .pdf form.

Chapter 4 deals with Singularities. (Page 96 of the reduced-size .pdf)

Through Peter Donis' help in this thread https://www.physicsforums.com/threa...l-collapse-and-cosmology.968323/#post-6153086 I discovered that when Hawking and Penrose were working together they made assumptions about the nature of the very early universe, calling these assumptions the energy conditions.

Now to my questions.

Are there any such assumptions (energy conditions) mentioned in this, Hawking's doctoral thesis, that relate to singularities?

If so, could I please be shown where they are?

If so, could their purpose please be explained to me, preferably at a Basic level?

If not, could it please be explained to me why Hawking did not use them? Many thanks in advance for any help given.Cerenkov.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...

Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b.
