Struggling to find a balance with final year workload

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around managing a heavy workload in the final semester of a degree program, specifically addressing the challenges of balancing multiple classes, a thesis, and experimental work. Participants share their experiences and seek advice on effective strategies for time management and prioritization.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses feeling overwhelmed by the workload of five classes and a thesis, seeking advice on how to balance these responsibilities.
  • Another participant questions whether any of the courses are optional, implying that reducing the load could be beneficial.
  • A participant suggests that prioritization is essential, indicating that some classes may require more focus than others, and reflects on their own experience of not dropping a class despite feeling overwhelmed.
  • Concerns are raised about the potential consequences of dropping a class versus receiving a lower grade, highlighting the stress of maintaining academic standing.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the difficulty of managing a heavy workload, but there are differing views on how to approach prioritization and the implications of dropping classes versus accepting lower grades.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the best strategies for balancing their workload, with no clear consensus on the optimal approach to managing time and responsibilities.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in their final year of study facing similar workload challenges, particularly in STEM fields, may find the shared experiences and advice relevant.

Hi all,

I was looking for some advice for my course as I have just entered the final semester of my final year and already find the workload overwhelming. I'm also trying to avoid leaving everything last minute like I usually do :)

This semester I have 5 classes and a thesis to write(as well as experimental work) , would anyone happen to have any advice on this best way to 'balance' all of this maybe from your own experiences?

How much revision should I do a day? Should I be trying to finish my experimental work before starting my write up? Should I have separate days allocated for thesis/revision or both on the same day? Should I have any days off?

I'm just looking for a general idea of how people find this balance as I never seem to get it right and can't afford to mess things up at this stage.

Thanks!

Thats a stupendous load. Are any courses not needed for graduation?

I wish but I'm afraid they are all compulsory classes.

At this point you will just have to hold on, and seriously think about which classes need the most devotion and which ones you may be forced to (unfortunately) neglect. I am in the same situation, 5 math/physics/engineering classes and a capstone presentation. I should have dropped one but I don't want to get a W. I'd honestly take a C over a W.
