AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on finding suitable books for studying Modern Physics in preparation for the IIT JAM Masters Entrance exam in India. Key recommendations include "Modern Physics" by Kenneth S. Krane and "Concepts of Modern Physics" by Beiser, Mahajan, and Choudhury, which are noted for being beginner-friendly with good illustrations. For special relativity, "Spacetime Physics" by Taylor and Wheeler is suggested, while for quantum mechanics, "Basic Concepts of Quantum Mechanics" by Tarasov is recommended. There is a concern about the affordability of these resources in India, with one participant expressing financial constraints. Overall, the focus is on identifying accessible and comprehensive materials for mastering Modern Physics concepts.

I am studying for an Masters Entrance exam called IIT JAM in India and this is my syllabus for Modern Physics.

I would be grateful to you if you were to point out a book
  1. Easy to read and understand
  2. Good for a beginner in Modern Physics
  3. Good illustrations and examples (if possible)
  4. Which has a solution manual (if possible)

So far, people have recommended me books for Quantum Physics like
  1. Quantum Mechanics by David McIntyre
  2. Principles of Quantum Mechanics by R. Shankar
  3. Quantum Mechanics by HC Verma
  4. Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications by Zettiki ( I have heard it has many solved examples and I love that)

I doubt if any of these would cover all of Modern Physics, so I am looking at books like
  1. Modern Physics by Kenneth S Krane
  2. Concepts of Modern Physics: Beiser, Mahajan, Choudhury
  3. Berkley lectures ?

For Special relativity, I suggest Spacetime Physics by Taylor and Wheeler, The Maroon edition.
For quantum mechanics, checkout Basic Concepts of Quantum Mechanics by Tarasov.

For the rest of the topics any Modern Physics book should do fine.

Unfortunately, the price of this book is too much here in India. I am broke enough to know I ain't buying it this decade.

Thanks for the reply tho!

Edit: And thanks for the book! :)

For the following four books, has anyone used them in a course or for self study? Compiler Construction Principles and Practice 1st Edition by Kenneth C Louden Programming Languages Principles and Practices 3rd Edition by Kenneth C Louden, and Kenneth A Lambert Programming Languages 2nd Edition by Allen B Tucker, Robert E Noonan Concepts of Programming Languages 9th Edition by Robert W Sebesta If yes to either, can you share your opinions about your personal experience using them. Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
I’ve heard that in some countries (for example, Argentina), the curriculum is structured differently from the typical American program. In the U.S., students usually take a general physics course first, then move on to a textbook like Griffiths, and only encounter Jackson at the graduate level. In contrast, in those countries students go through a general physics course (such as Resnick-Halliday) and then proceed directly to Jackson. If the slower, more gradual approach is considered...
