Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a humorous and speculative scenario involving time travel and the Titanic, sparked by a participant's frustration over receiving a late conference notice. The conversation touches on themes of physics, time travel, and social dynamics in a life-or-death situation.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion and frustration over receiving a late conference notice, humorously referencing Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
  • Another participant acknowledges the typo in the year of the conference notice, suggesting it was simply an error.
  • A suggestion is made to use a wormhole and closed timelike curves (CTCs) to travel back to the beginning of the conference, introducing a playful time travel element.
  • A humorous scenario is proposed where the time traveler ends up on the Titanic, raising the question of what actions to take in that situation.
  • One participant suggests a romantic approach to securing a spot on a lifeboat, adding a comedic twist to the survival dilemma.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion remains light-hearted and speculative, with no clear consensus or resolution on the proposed scenarios or actions regarding the Titanic.

Contextual Notes

The conversation relies on humorous interpretations of physics concepts and does not delve into serious implications or consequences of time travel or survival ethics.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in humorous takes on physics, time travel, and social dynamics in extreme situations may find this discussion engaging.

In this past Saturday's mail, I received the Fall 2011 New England Section Newsletter of the American Physical Society which proudly announces a conference on Climate Change and the Future of Nuclear Power to be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Friday and Saturday, November 18-19, 2011.

:confused::confused::confused:

Seeing as this was a mass mailing, I believe it highly unlikely that I was the only member to receive this notice on Saturday, November 19, 2011, the SECOND DAY OF THE CONFERENCE! (Then again, such is not forbidden by the laws of physics, and as the great Richard Feynman himself said: "Anything not forbidden by the laws of physics is compulsory.".

So, should I feel personally slighted? If I were Heisenberg, I would be uncertain!

That is late.

Yeah, OK, so I edited it from "Fall 2001" to "Fall 2011".

Just a typo. Sorry!

Just jump into your neighborhood wormhole and ride a CTC back to the beginning of the conference.

That's it!

You've solved my problem!

OH, NO!

I'VE LANDED ABOARD THE TITANIC (which just so happens to be fully equipped with free Wi-Fi access (pretty good for 1912, hey?))!

What do I do now?

Romance a beautiful woman, sleep with her then convince her to give up her spot on the lifeboat for you
