SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the experiences of individuals recovering from wisdom teeth extraction, specifically highlighting the typical swelling patterns post-surgery. Participants confirm that swelling peaks on the third day after extraction, often accompanied by discomfort and the risk of complications like dry socket. Various remedies are suggested, including ice packs and hot compresses, to alleviate pain and swelling. Personal anecdotes illustrate the emotional and physical challenges faced during recovery, emphasizing the importance of following post-operative care instructions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of post-operative care for dental procedures
  • Knowledge of common complications such as dry socket
  • Familiarity with pain management techniques, including the use of ice and heat
  • Awareness of the typical timeline for recovery after wisdom teeth extraction
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the management of dry socket and its prevention strategies
  • Learn about the physiological reasons for swelling after dental surgery
  • Explore effective pain relief methods post-surgery, including medications and home remedies
  • Investigate the role of nutrition in recovery after wisdom teeth removal
USEFUL FOR

Why would getting your wisdom tooth pulled cause swelling? I've had 4 molars pulled (for space) and the only inconvient thing was bicycling back home with the vision in my mind that there would be blood dripping out of my mouth  ofcourse, now I've got a wisdom tooth that needs to be removed..

I think it depends on the difficulty of the extraction...and in MIH's case, an infection already present. Wisdom teeth are strange things, and the roots are pretty variable. Some come out pretty easily, and others need to be shattered to pieces to take out bit by bit, and others surgically removed by cutting the gum. It also depends on whether the roots are straighter or more twisted, and how close the roots are to the nerve that runs near them (as in therealkelly's case, they can even have the nerve wrapped right around the root). And, well, some people just bruise easier than others too.

When I had mine out (all 4 at once, with two that were so badly impacted, they needed to surgically remove them...they were completely sideways and hadn't broken the surface of the gum but instead were pressing on the roots of the molars next to them), I didn't have any noticeable swelling or pain other than a slight ache from having the muscles of my jaw stretched so far for the oral surgeon to get into my mouth (and I always thought I had a big mouth ) and where the knots from the stitches I needed were irritating the gum. I didn't take a single one of the vicodin I was prescribed. But, I've seen other people who just have one pulled that has already erupted through the gum, yet their entire face puffs up as if they'd been the loser in a boxing match.

ha ha Pirate Monique! Yarrh!

The right side of my mouth where they only took out upper and lower wisdom teeth never hurt or swelled at all. Seriously, I've had more soreness from fillings than what I had from those two extractions.

But on the left side they took out a molar on top, fixed an abcess, and repaired a hole in the sinus, and on the bottom they took out a wisdom tooth that was badly impacted. That side is taking a while to settle down. I have to stay on antibiotics for a while longer.

I just bit the head off the chocolate reindeer I got in my Christmas stocking. This is a good sign.

Yay! Glad to hear you're doing better. Eating chocolate is too important to not be able to do it for long.
