Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around experiences and concerns related to swelling after wisdom teeth extraction. Participants share personal anecdotes, advice on managing discomfort, and reflections on recovery timelines, with a focus on the inflammatory response and care strategies.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested
  • Personal experiences

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that swelling typically begins on day two and peaks on day three, suggesting a common inflammatory response.
  • Another participant shares their experience of immediate swelling and a gradual decrease over a week, recommending ice for pain relief.
  • There are mentions of complications, such as an abscess and sinus repair surgery, which may contribute to increased swelling.
  • Some participants express humor about looking like chipmunks post-surgery, while others share coping strategies like eating soft foods and avoiding sneezing.
  • Concerns are raised about the difficulty of sneezing and blowing one's nose after surgery, with some questioning the feasibility of avoiding these actions.
  • Several participants discuss their dietary challenges and preferences during recovery, including a desire for more substantial meals beyond soup.
  • One participant reflects on past dental experiences, including root canals and antibiotic treatments, relating them to current discussions about inflammation and recovery.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants share similar experiences regarding swelling and recovery timelines, but there are varying accounts of individual reactions and complications. The discussion remains unresolved on the best practices for managing discomfort and the implications of surgical complications.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention specific medical advice and personal recovery experiences, which may not apply universally. There are references to individual health conditions and responses to medications that could influence recovery outcomes.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals preparing for wisdom teeth extraction, those currently recovering from the procedure, and anyone interested in shared experiences related to dental surgery and post-operative care.

Why would getting your wisdom tooth pulled cause swelling? I've had 4 molars pulled (for space) and the only inconvient thing was bicycling back home with the vision in my mind that there would be blood dripping out of my mouth  ofcourse, now I've got a wisdom tooth that needs to be removed..

I think it depends on the difficulty of the extraction...and in MIH's case, an infection already present. Wisdom teeth are strange things, and the roots are pretty variable. Some come out pretty easily, and others need to be shattered to pieces to take out bit by bit, and others surgically removed by cutting the gum. It also depends on whether the roots are straighter or more twisted, and how close the roots are to the nerve that runs near them (as in therealkelly's case, they can even have the nerve wrapped right around the root). And, well, some people just bruise easier than others too.

When I had mine out (all 4 at once, with two that were so badly impacted, they needed to surgically remove them...they were completely sideways and hadn't broken the surface of the gum but instead were pressing on the roots of the molars next to them), I didn't have any noticeable swelling or pain other than a slight ache from having the muscles of my jaw stretched so far for the oral surgeon to get into my mouth (and I always thought I had a big mouth ) and where the knots from the stitches I needed were irritating the gum. I didn't take a single one of the vicodin I was prescribed. But, I've seen other people who just have one pulled that has already erupted through the gum, yet their entire face puffs up as if they'd been the loser in a boxing match.

ha ha Pirate Monique! Yarrh!

The right side of my mouth where they only took out upper and lower wisdom teeth never hurt or swelled at all. Seriously, I've had more soreness from fillings than what I had from those two extractions.

But on the left side they took out a molar on top, fixed an abcess, and repaired a hole in the sinus, and on the bottom they took out a wisdom tooth that was badly impacted. That side is taking a while to settle down. I have to stay on antibiotics for a while longer.

I just bit the head off the chocolate reindeer I got in my Christmas stocking. This is a good sign.

Yay! Glad to hear you're doing better. Eating chocolate is too important to not be able to do it for long.
