Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the appropriate use of tense in technical reports, specifically regarding the section 'Analysis of System Operation' in the context of a data acquisition program. Participants explore whether to use present tense to describe system operations, despite the program being completed.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the tense to use in their technical report, suggesting that present tense may be more appropriate as they are explaining how the system operates.
  • Another participant agrees that present tense seems suitable, likening the report to a User's Manual for the program.
  • A third participant reinforces the preference for present tense, stating that the report is focused on discussing, analyzing, and evaluating the system rather than detailing an experiment.
  • A later reply suggests that providing an example of the report could help others offer more tailored advice or opinions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that present tense may be the best choice for describing system operations, but there is no consensus on the matter as some uncertainty remains regarding the appropriateness of tense in technical writing.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not provided specific examples of the text in question, which may limit the ability to reach a more definitive conclusion about tense usage.

Hi, I know this isn't a technical question but I have to write a technical report based on a data acquisition program which I have created. I am a bit confused about the tenses of one section, namely 'Analysis of System operation' . Although the program has already been made, i feel that it should be written in the present tense as I am explaining how the system works, not how it was made. Any Ideas (sorry if its the wrong section) :)

I agree that the present tense seems the best match. I'm thinking that much of what you are writing is like a User's Manual for users of your program...

Its a technical report based on the data acquistion program produced where the system must be discussed, analysed and evaluated. Ill stick with present tense as I am not explaining an experiment that was carried out as such and I think present tense reads better. Thanks :)

If you posted an example of your report...a few sentences...or a paragraph, then members here might be better able to advise and or offer opinions.
