Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by students in a material science course taught by a teacher perceived as ineffective. Participants express concerns about the lack of proper instructional materials, the teaching style, and the preparation for an upcoming exam. The conversation includes advice on how to navigate the situation and seek clarity regarding course expectations.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes the teacher as "terrible" and notes the absence of textbooks, relying instead on disorganized PDF files.
  • Concerns are raised about the teacher's lack of engagement with students and the inadequacy of the exercise material provided.
  • Another participant suggests asking the teacher directly about the exam content to clarify what to study.
  • Some participants express skepticism about the effectiveness of complaining to the dean, suggesting that collective action from the class may be more impactful.
  • A participant shares a personal experience of self-teaching in a similar situation, emphasizing the need for students to take initiative in their learning.
  • There is a discussion about the standards to which professors are held, with some arguing that teaching quality is often overlooked in favor of research output.
  • One participant mentions the importance of understanding what the original poster wants to achieve in order to formulate an effective approach to the situation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions regarding the effectiveness of the teacher and the best course of action. While some agree on the inadequacy of the teaching methods, others caution against escalating the issue without careful consideration. There is no consensus on whether to complain to the dean or how best to prepare for the exam.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight the potential limitations of relying solely on the teacher for guidance and the varying standards of teaching across different institutions. The discussion reflects a mix of personal experiences and broader observations about academic environments.

Who May Find This Useful

Students facing similar challenges in their courses, particularly in STEM fields, may find the shared experiences and advice relevant to their situations.

I think certain people here are missing an important point, it's absurd to pay 1k-2k$ for a class which an instructor half-asses and does not at least attempt to have students comprehend the material.

The argument that instructors don't owe students anything is bizarre considering students pay university's to teach them the material.

It would be one thing if universities were purely funded by research grants, but they are not and a significant portion of their funding comes from students attending their university to be taught a subject.

In a private enterprise, such an instructor would be fired...

Excellent point!

For the record I'm not trying to get him fired. That's too far for me or any student to go. Besides, he knows the material, he just needs to make a small leap to make it more accessible to students.

But then... what would keep the right hand side of my top shelf in place?

1) place magnet ontop of shelf
2) glue steel bar to roof
3) ?
4) book companies go broke!
