AI Thread Summary
Linus Torvalds, a Finnish university student, created the Linux kernel in 1991 while using Minix, a simplified Unix-like system. The development of Linux was motivated by the limitations of Minix, which Andrew Tanenbaum, its creator, did not allow others to modify. There have been rumors suggesting that Torvalds copied code from Minix, but these claims are dismissed in a historical article by a Minix coder. The article highlights Torvalds' significant improvements to the system, emphasizing that while he was inspired by Minix, he aimed to create a more flexible and extensible operating system. This context clarifies the origins of Linux and its development trajectory.

well, the obvious answer is linus... (atleast he did the kernel, GNU coders coded lots of linux too)

but there were rumors going on that linus copied code off of minix.
i found a nice history articile made by the coder of minix.
nothing revolutionary about it.
he dissmisses these rumors, but it was pretty interesting to read, this guy writes well.

I thought that it was common knowledge that Linus was a user of Minix but say many ways in which it could be improved then made considerable improvements.

Meanwhile, in 1991, another kernel was begun as a hobby by Finnish university student Linus Torvalds while attending the University of Helsinki. Torvalds originally used Minix on his own computer, a simplified Unix-like system written by Andrew Tanenbaum for teaching operating system design. However, Tanenbaum did not permit others to extend his operating system, leading Torvalds to create a replacement for Minix.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Sorry if 'Profile Badge' is not the correct term. I have an MS 365 subscription and I've noticed on my Word documents the small circle with my initials in it is sometimes different in colour document to document (it's the circle at the top right of the doc, that, when you hover over it it tells you you're signed in; if you click on it you get a bit more info). Last night I had four docs with a red circle, one with blue. When I closed the blue and opened it again it was red. Today I have 3...
